You can't see that running a battery down until there is less than 2 minutes of run time left on the APC might not allow the battery to recharge, and not allow you to shutdown gracefully?
Yes, Energy Saver should - it just sends a command to the system to initiate a shutdown.
The Mac Pro makes a demand for more power on wake from sleep state than normal. And normally my system with one monitor is using 350W now, or just under the 865W that the 1500VA is rated for. 50% is actually reasonable. You don't want to be using or asking a UPS to be at 80%.
If you install Windows, you can see what PowerChute would/should be offering. And it hasn't been updated since '06 which means not 10.4.10 let alone 10.5.1 tested.
When I talked to APC years ago, they were interested in OS X and the Mac and supporting it.

Learning has never been so easy!
Probably born of frustration with the anemic PowerChute software included with most APC UPSes, apcupsd (http://www.apcupsd.com/) is a powerful open source (GPL) alternative.
Most if not all APC UPSes allow only a single system to monitor the UPS' status if PowerChute is used. To support simple tasks like graceful shutdown on additional systems, expensive hardware (network management cards) and/or increased software licensing is required. There are no artificial limits to the number of systems that can be supported by apcupsd and it is supported on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, BSD and Solaris operating systems.
Apcupsd has both server and client modes. Adobe flash download for mac yosemite. Running as a server on a system directly connected to a UPS, apcupsd monitors the UPS' status and passively provides this information to clients. Running as a client, apcupsd can be configured to periodically request status information from an apcupsd server. Based on the information retrieved, the client can perform local tasks such as a graceful shutdown.
APC technical support is known to recommend apcupsd to its customers. Onyx for macos 10.15.
1 Steps total
Step 1: Download and install apcupsd for your platform(s)
Download and install apcupsd as a server on the system connected to the UPS monitor port (USB or Serial). Change configuration settings in apcupsd.conf as appropriate. The configuration file provides basic documentation and is self-explanatory for the most part. For more detailed information, see the Configuration Examples section of the User Manual (http://www.apcupsd.com/manual/manual.html).
After the server is installed and configured, install apcupsd as a client on the remaining systems protected by the monitored UPS. Configuration on clients will differ slightly from the server configuration. Clients should be configured to begin graceful shutdown before servers, otherwise clients may not be able to retrieve status of the UPS in the case of power failure.

- DatilTino Todino Aug 9, 2010 at 02:40amCan this monitor over a network port to a web management card in the UPS???
- TabascoRonald Nissley Aug 9, 2010 at 11:19amTino,Very likely, yes, though I've never used it this way. Apcupsd documentation indicates that SNMP and PCNET ('an alternative for SNMP available on APC's AP9617 family of smart slot modules') are supported. See the section 'Supported UPSes and Cables' (pp. 8-9) in the User Manual. http://apcupsd.com/manual/manual.pdf
- JalapenoTim Long Nov 10, 2011 at 06:42amapcupsd is GREAT and overcomes a lot of stupid limitations of PowerChute. For example: it will run on a Hyper-V host, which PowerChute will not.I can't get spiceworks to scan the UPS's though. Does it recognize apcupsd?

- CayenneNigel M Jun 11, 2014 at 08:27amBrilliant software. Monitoring nicely on XP, 2003 & Win7 on USB and serial. Now starting to explore the options.
Spiceworks can't scan for it as it looks for WMI entries under rootcimv2.
apcupsd does talk via port 3551 (by default) which could be the source of a future feature addition I hope :-) - AnaheimBHall74 Jan 19, 2016 at 11:22pmDo you need the network card or can it be connected to serial?
